The Difference Between Recovery & Deliverance

By Rev. Jerald F. Jenkins

There are many recovery programs out there that tell us that we can stay in recovery by working their program and finding God, as we know Him or a Higher Power.

The Addicts Victorious programs however are a deliverance program based on God's Word. In the NKJV Bible there are only three verses that mention recovery, however there are 98 verses that talk about deliverance. You see our God is a God of salvation, deliverance and healing. As found in John 8:31 & 32 “31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, ‘If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.'”

The truth He was talking about is found in John 14:6 “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.'”

You see, there is no way we can find God as we know Him or a Higher Power without going through the door which is Jesus Christ - the only way to the Father. The freedom He was talking about is found in John 8:36 where He said “Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”

On November 9th 1986 at 51 years old, I surrendered my life to Jesus Christ and accepted Him as my Lord and Savior. At this point I was saved, delivered and healed. He delivered me from my alcohol, tobacco, gambling and various other addictions that had plagued me my whole entire life. If I would stand up in a meeting today and said “Hi, I'm Jerry, an alcoholic” that statement would be contrary to God's Word, because the Word says we have been delivered  and set free. As Scripture says in 2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”

If anyone has a question of what true deliverance is they can find the answer in Romans 6:16 - 23 where it says “16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one's slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? 17 But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. 18 And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. 19 I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness. 20 For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21 What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. 22 But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

This is truly the life changing experience that is found in the Addicts Victorious programs throughout the world, and the 5-Day Biblical Counseling Program held in our international headquarters in Quincy, Illinois.
